Used as high, low, or mid-level sensors, they can assure a continuous supply of material into a production process and prevent downtime. When used in conjunction with an alarm – such as a horn or light – or wired to a PLC, they make the workplace safer by eliminating the need to climb vessels. Point level sensors are easy to install through an existing mounting connection, and many offer varied power supplies, making them convenient to wire to the existing electrical system. Used extensively by Plant Management and Maintenance to manage inventory and control the production process.

Types of Point Level Indicators

Rotary Paddle Level Sensors

Rotating paddle level sensors are a long-established and widely used approach to bulk solid point level indication. They employ low-speed gear motors to rotate paddle wheels within bins. When a paddle is slowed or stopped by the solid material in the bin, the motor rotates on its shaft until a flange mounted on the motor contacts a mechanical switch. Or, in other cases, the circuit actuates an output relay to provide an alert signal.

Capacitance Probes

Capacitance probes are used for high- and low-level detection in bins, silos, tanks, hoppers, chutes, and other vessels used for material storage or process manufacturing. They detect the presence or absence of material in contact with the probe by sensing minute changes (as low as 0.5 pF) in capacitance caused by the difference in the dielectric constant of the material versus the air.

Diaphragm Switches

Pressure or diaphragm switches provide simple, reliable, low-cost, automatic level indication of free-flowing dry materials like grain, feed, seed, and other granular or pelleted materials. They operate by sensing material that presses against the diaphragm. There are models for hazardous and non-hazardous environments and internal or external mounting.

Tilt Level Sensors

Tilt switches are versatile, cost-effective level indicators that can be used to alert personnel to high levels and clogged chutes. Comprised of a control unit and a tilt probe, these devices sense the presence or absence of material. They can also be used to detect plugs or clogs in chutes during process operations.

Vibrating Rod Level Switches A Vibrating Rod — also known as Vibrating Level Switch — is a reliable Point Level Sensor used for high and low level detection or plugged chute detection. They can be used in light, fluffy powders and flakes with bulk densities as low as 1.XS25 lb/ft³ or for heavier materials such as granules or pellets. Vibrating Rods feature a unique, sword-shaped probe that resists build-up and false alarms. Special models detect sediment under water, and a compact Mini Vibrating Rod fits in tight spaces and small hoppers.
